Oooh...my all time favourite is Saint Rachel by Michael Bracewell. I stumbled upon it when I was 13 because I liked the cover, and it ended up being the starting off point for my views on pretty much everything. In a nutshell it's about a guy who's depressed because his wife has left him, and ends up falling for a pre-op transsexual. The thing is, this wasn't mentioned in any of the blurb, and I had no idea Rachel was a man until it was stated halfway through the book, which is probably why it had such an impact. I'd like to see a film made along those lines, in fact a nagging idea of mine is quite similar,but the prose is so lush and deelicate they couldn't possibly recreate it.
